Free Keyword Search Tools Review

What are keywords?
Keywords are search queries people use on search engines.
What are keyword search tools?
Keyword search tools are special tools in the internet that help people to find keywords.

To start your keyword search process, try think-like-your-customer-exercise. Which words would you use if you would try to find your business (product, service) on the internet? After listing all words and combinations, expand your list by spelling, synonyms, and plurals variations. Check what your competitors use.  Or do it from the scratch – then you will be free from any influences and will find your personal unique money making niche.

There are special tools on the web that help people to find keywords, called keyword search tools. You can find free and paid (subscription-based or pay-per-use) tools in the internet. By definition, the tools you pay money for should work better than the free ones, however, you might get more accurate research results with free tools. It’s always better to search for reviews before spending time and money for the keyword search tool. Try to understand which reviews are written as advertisement and which are truth. Then find answers for simple questions: what is the source of database? How often it is updated? Is this all true that these guys claim? No matter how great the tool’s interface is or how many nice charts you can get from – reliability and completeness of the database is the key. Start from the free search tools, especially taking into account that for base search some really great tool are available.

Google Keyword Tool

Database: real search volume data gathered by Google from their own search engine. High quality, clean, accurate and frequently updated keyword database, with estimated search volume.
Description: This is definitely one of the best keyword search tools, as it is based on real search volume data gathered by Google from their own search engine. Unlikely any other keyword search toll provider can get all the data directly from Google, which will be much more accurate than that provided by the paid keyword research services.
Features:

  • Gives estimated cost, competition level, and suggests potential negative keywords.
  • Shows 12 months historical search trends.
  • Easy to export your list as an XLS spreadsheet.
  • Search for keywords in over 50 languages.

Negatives:

  • The estimates are very rough.
  • This tool is useless for long keyword phrases more than 3 words in length.

Google Search-based Keyword Tool. This is a relatively new tool released in November 2008.
Database: the same as for Google Keyword Tool.
Description: The purpose of this tool is to look specifically at your site and offer new keywords ideas relevant to your site. It goes beyond what the other Google tools provide and tells you what keywords you are currently missing out on based on search query data from your site’s content. It is a great tool as a second step of your keyword search.

Features:

  • Can be used as a good competitive analysis tool. Just type site’s domain, click go and get relevant keywords to any site on the Internet. Especially helpful if you are getting into a new business and would like to inquire which keywords are the most popular among your competitors.
  • Show keywords by category.

Wordtracker

Database: Keyword data from two meta search engines – Dogpile and Metacrawler. Both search engines hold about 1% of market share.
Features:

  • Has more features than most other keyword search tools.
  • Helps to find related terms by offering a built in thesaurus and lateral search.
  • Negatives:
  • Only grabs data from a couple of meta search engines.
  • Their free tool has a limit of 100 results. If you want to see all keywords, you must pay. But the free database is very detailed, so 100 results is good enough.

SEO Book Keyword Research Tool

Database: relies on Wordtracker.
Description: This tool gives exactly the same results as Wordtracker plus the extras that come on top of regular keyword research.
Features:

  • Search Yahoo Suggest, Google Suggest, Google Traffic Estimator, Google Insights, Quintra, News Search, Directories, Blog Search, Tag Search and more, all in one place. Play around and match quickly and easily.
  • Links to different information systems (news search, directories, blog search, tagging sites, etc.) to help you find useful resources and things people are discussing in your marketplace.
  • Offers rough suggested daily search volumes by market.

Yahoo Search Marketing (formerly known as the Overture Keyword Selector Tool)

Database: Has a large partner network to gather data from. Updated on regular basis.
Description: One of the major search engines in the web, Yahoo offers this search marketing tool to webmasters and Internet marketers.
Negatives: you have to go througt several steps before you actually can start the search process every time you use this tool. If you want a faster way,  you can open an account with Yahoo pay-per-click service for $50.

There are many other online tools available for finding keywords. We just mentioned the most popular free ones.  To find more, type “keyword research” or “keyword research tool” on search engines.

Some people spend a lot of their time playing with keyword search tools. In many cases, the more tools you use, the more results you have, the less confidence in chosen combination you have, as it’s unlikely you get exactly the same keyword combination from different tools. Start using the combination and test it on practice. Or you might find that pay per click campaign works good for testing your keywords.
